Men in South Africa may soon be facing the introduction of Viagra, a popular medicine that can help improve sexual function, a new study suggests.
The study, carried out by a group of South African scientists, found that men taking the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra were significantly more likely to have difficulties getting an erection, compared to those taking a placebo.
The men taking the drug were over a year older than those taking a placebo, the study, which was published in the journal Sexual Medicine, found.
The researchers say the results suggest that men taking Viagra might be more likely to have difficulties with achieving and maintaining an erection, as well as with more frequent ejaculation.
Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Sildenafil, was originally developed to treat angina but was later found to help with erectile dysfunction by boosting blood flow to the penis, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection.
Viagra's patent ran out in 2012 and the drug was quickly blocked by authorities in Europe, where it is widely used.
Researchers, led by Dr Nachumu Katlow, an associate professor at the University of Oxford, looked at data from two large, placebo-controlled trials conducted in three African countries, including South Africa.
The researchers found that men who took Viagra had significantly more difficulty getting an erection than those who took a placebo.
In the study, men taking Viagra were significantly more likely to have difficulties with getting an erection, compared to those taking a placebo.
The researchers also found that men who used Viagra had more frequent ejaculation, as compared to those who used a placebo.
Viagra can help men with erectile dysfunction, such as low sexual desire or problems with ejaculation, by increasing blood flow to the penis.
However, the researchers note that the study did not find a link between the drugs and erectile difficulties, which is why it is important for men to be fully aware of their risks and benefits.
A separate, smaller, clinical trial, which was not included in the new study, is underway in Canada.

The drug was quickly blocked by the European Medicines Agency in March last year, after it was discovered that a Chinese company that makes it, GSK, had used it to boost a drug called Nitroglycerin.
The FDA then alerted the European Medicines Agency, but the drug was never approved for sexual activity, but a warning was placed on the label in July last year.

Riayan said he was seen using the prescription medication on his way to a local pharmacy. Police say the man also bought the medication from a pharmacy in Ringaskasketi.
